Except for pre-arranged conferences and urgent enquiries, King View Chambers will be closed for the Christmas period from 17th December to 27th December.

I represented a doctor before the MPTS on allegations of the utmost seriousness—allegations so grave that the GMC sought his erasure from the medical register if they were found proved. From the outset, I was clear about the stakes and the need for a precise, strategic defence.

My client, Dr Z, never wavered in his instructions. He maintained his innocence throughout, asserting that some witnesses had been misled into giving their evidence, while others were simply untruthful. He further instructed that certain documents produced by witnesses had been fabricated to incriminate him. Because the allegations were historic, no devices could be examined, meaning the defence had to rely entirely on targeted disclosure requests—some made during the hearing itself—and rigorous, forensic cross‑examination of every witness.

The case concluded at Stage 1, with the Tribunal finding none of the allegations proved.

Dr Z suffered immeasurably during the three years of investigation leading up to the hearing. When I took over the case, I was forced to apply for a postponement because his previous representatives—who did not believe his instructions—had completed no preparation whatsoever. This inevitably prolonged the process.

However, it demonstrated the importance of securing representation who will fight for you with a well‑thought‑out and agreed strategy. Even the postponement application became a feature of the case, preventing the admission of further ‘evidence’ produced by witnesses. It was one of the most complex cases I have handled in recent years. I was delighted to achieve this outcome for Dr Z and even more delighted that he can now move forward with his life and career.

Dr Z said:

“If you are seeking the highest standard of legal representation for GMC proceedings, look no further than Mr Stephen McCaffrey at Kings View Chambers. I am incredibly grateful to have had Mr Stephen McCaffrey representing me; his expertise is truly unparalleled. I believe he is the premier GMC defence barrister available. Throughout a very difficult GMC Fitness to Practise process, Stephen was a pillar of support.

He is professional, highly competent, and—most importantly—entirely trustworthy. He presented my case with exceptional skill, which ultimately led to a positive outcome. Beyond his legal expertise, his communication was excellent; he kept me informed and guided me through every step of the process. This level of care helped me remain calm and focused during the MPTS hearing.

He is worth every penny and every minute of your time. If you are facing GMC proceedings, Stephen is the advocate you want in your corner.”
